That change isn't going to completely remove RPGs from the discussion. Don't worry, its going to be a good change.

Honestly, Golieth, I can't think of a single podcast that calls itself an RPG podcast and doesn't deal with RPG's at least the majority of the time. Except for half of Kicked in the Dicebags, but Chris is just in denial. Jonathan admits it. Some of them may deal with them very, very, VERY poorly (I would be looking at Trapcast, if they hadn't totally podfaded at this point), but they do still generally deal with RPGs.

I'm kind of looking forward to, and kind of sad about, the changes coming to Bear Swarm. I've been with you guys since the single digits and enjoyed (almost) every episode thoroughly, really enjoy your insights on RPGs, even if I do spend at least half my time wanting to strangle you for being so horribly, painfully wrong. :P

But change happens, it's the way of things, and I'm hopeful things will come out at least as good. ... Jesus fuck, I got way off my topic. I'm gonna kill this while I have a chance.

We do talk about RPGs every week, including our experiences with RPGs. We are re-categorizing ourselves after Episode 100 when we go to a non-RPG specific format.

I also wonder why certain podcasts call themselves RPG podcasts when they are really just commentaries on their own personal lives and/or geek culture in general. To be fair, their early podcasts actually had rpg content. However, they might reach a better match of audience if they categorized their podcast to reflect current content.

Simple solution to that: In front of everyone, demand that one of the group join you in roleplay rules-free on a regular basis. He will refuse, apparently. Between then and the next game, make him disappear. People will eventually get the picture and give it a shot, and learn that it's actually pretty awesome, and everybody wins! ... Well, everybody that's still around.

That is why I prefer games like Houses of the Blooded where the rules are there to facilitate telling a story and not determine success\failure.

I disregard rules for the sake of telling a story but there are games out there with rules the actually help tell a story.

The biggest reason that I still play traditional role-playing games is because its nigh-impossible for me to find a group that doesn't still want those style games. As long as I pretend to play by the rules, no one cares and I can play the game how I prefer playing.

Between various podcasts I've been listening to, I've been steadily getting the impression that a lot of RPG podcasters really shouldn't even be bothering with RPGs, but none to the same degree as this one. Rob, why even bother with the thin facade of even having a game? Just roleplay. Period. Grab a setting, grab some people, tell them to stuff their rules, and go to town. No dice, no character sheets, playing cards, It's a blast.

But if you're going to bother playing a Role-playing GAME, you should actually play the game. And rules are what make a game. I don't advocate strict adherence to the absolute letter of the law, because sometimes the rules are just stupid, but that's the exception, not the rule.

If you're not? Well, drop the game, just roleplay. As long as nobody's an asshat or overly competitive douchebag, it works out great. Play your characters, tell your stories, and don't bother with random decision makers, rule mechanics, or any of that crap, and leave the games to the Xbox.

Not for nothing, but the new Wheel of Time book was co-written by Brandon Sanderson because Robert Jordan died, not because he wanted to hand it over to someone else.

Rob, Lies of Locke Lamora is exactly your kind of book. It's about a crew of con men in a low-fantasy version of renaissance Venice.

Name of the Wind is also pretty solid, nothing new in terms of the fantasy genre, but very well executed.

This episode reminded me of why I keep listening to your podcast. For a while I really wasn't sure why I did- but this episode reminded me. Quite frankly, you fellows just have the sort of taste in media with which I can relate. After the Podge Cast's "Best in Geek Media" episode (and its utter bullshit and unenlightening choices)- I couldn't help but feel a bit alienated from podcasts of that genre (which I do believe you fellows fall into).

You guys, however, have opinions with which I can identify. I can sink my fingers into your discussions on film, and, as such, I can relate to your disparate ideas on role-playing games. Good job, fellows.

That said, I'll still listen to the Podge Cast, but only while I'm waiting for a new Bear Swarm episode.

4E is actually the first edition of D&D that DOES let you shift from very abstract combat to very tactical combat, seamlessly and easily. If you haven't picked up the DMG2, I highly recommend it. I think it's the best book they've put out for 4E. You'll see in there just how much you can do with a skill challenge. I've used it to structure negotiations, to play out montages, and yes, to run battles. You can (in fact, I have) run a skill challenge for your preparations for battle--which gives you the perfect format for your tactical guy to work out tactical preparations, while the talky guy gives the "Braveheart" speech, while the thief does some covert ops to sabotage the enemy. You turn the success of that skill challenge into an advantage in the skill challenge for actually commanding the battle, and seeing how the tide of battle goes, and then that sets the scene for the combat encounter where you find your PC's in the thick of said battle. Or, even better, you put them together: a skill challenge inside of a combat, so you have to command your forces while doing some of the fighting yourself.

I have to say, if, like Rob said, you stop playing your character and stop playing the board, that doesn't sound like 4E's fault. That sounds like crappy encounter design.

And since this is the first time I've commented on an episode, I have to add: Mike, you need to say "fair enough" more often.

To your "television show that changes" question, the TV Series "Millennium" from 1996-1999 was drastically different in each of its three seasons. The first season was a CSI-esque police procedural where they chased down the serial killer of the week. It was kind of ahead of its time.

The second season was a conspiracy-laden thriller packed with secret societies and apocalyptic prophecy that ended with most of the main characters dead or gone. 95% of the stuff introduced in the first season was completely erased or ignored. The second season is some of the best television Ten Thirteen Productions ever put out. I can't recommend it enough.

The third season became a buddy cop show (in the vaguest sense) with 95% of the previous season erased or ignored, and it was a little too similar to The X-Files and it ultimately led to the show's demise, despite the addition of FBI Agent Baldwin.

Watch the first and last discs of Season 1, and all of Season 2. Fantastic stuff.

For your Gen Con episode, you should do a show that features Meta-Games employees in your stead. Homero, Ryan, Jason, Allan, Jeff, and Walt along with the regular BS crew who are staying behind. The show would be SOLID GOLD, I promise you that.

Its not just itunes, seems like our Powerpress plugin decided to deactivate and erase our latest episode's enclosure. I've reset everything and re-synced the feed, so it should be showing up here and on any straight feed-reader now. iTunes might take awhile to pick it up though, those buggers are slow sometimes.

I'm still listening, but I couldn't agree more about the actor and Rorschach. He was amazing. He captured the character so well, he was perfect imo. If he had been poor, the whole movie would've suffered. He is one of the major reasons I liked it. A short, ugly actor? Come on! How many roles are out there for him? Oh wait... Danny DeVito...

I believe goblins as a race are only 2/3 as interesting as a normal race, such as elves or dwarves, whereas gnomes are a little more than 1/3. Put them together (call em gnoblins or something) and you get a race that is actually interesting. This is what Blizzard did, except they forgot to kill off the gnomes.

I'm well aware that they wouldn't be edited, but I had no idea about the omnidirectional mics.

And also the blogging software seems to have eaten the winking smiley I put at the end to indicate that while it was a legitimate criticism, I was having fun with it.

You must not be aware of what Actual Plays are and how they are recorded.

First, their completely unedited. We don't listen through them and cut out all the little noises to make ourselves sound better for a couple reasons. Firstly being its five hours of, what we consider, bonus audio. These aren't our main episodes and are just supplements for our Reviews. Second, we produce Actual Plays to be more like sitting down with a gaming group and not like a scripted radio drama. And the last reason ties into how our Actual Plays are recorded.

We use an omni-direction microphone to pick-up EVERYTHING in the room. We don't have our own mics and we don't have the ability to NOT make noises into the microphone. A burp is going to pick up no matter where it is in the room, directed at the microphone or not. Sure, we COULD attempt to muffle the noise but that pulls us away from the ambiance of the game and back to paying attention to the fact that we are recording.

This is simply one of those cases of, we're not going to change this for our extra content. If you don't like an aspect of our Actual Plays, then you should likely just skip them. They are all going to be raw, unedited, Bear Swarm.

Listening to the third part now, but overall I have one comment I'd like to make:

STOP BURPING INTO YOUR MICS!

It totally ruins the flow for the listeners and makes you guys sound like a bunch of unprofessional, disgusting louts.

Yes, I am well aware that firing off a loud, echoing expulsion of air from one's gut is a prime expression of manliness, but it doesn't belong in a podcast.

I sent an e-mail in through your contact button on the main page, but here I am adding a comment as well just in case you don't check that e-mail often: Read Warren Ellis' 'Global Frequency.' The premise of the comic (which was only 12 issues) is that a mysterious former spook who calls herself Miranda Zero has created a network of 1001 individuals with specialized skills or knowledge who she can call on to handle emergency situations; every issue has a different artists and a different team dealing with a different issue (ranging from alien signal-viruses to doomsday cults).

There's one issue in particular (#2, in the first trade paperback) called "Big Wheel" that's about a team sent in to deal with a government cybernetics project that's about to escape into the larger world. Military grade cybernetics and enhancements are given a rather unflinchingly brutal look, not just in the freakish 500 million dollar man but even for the woman who just has one "super-arm." As she puts it:

"I have to be careful with it. Bioelectric enhancements are cranky. It's not just a case of sticking an artificial arm on. The surrounding bones and fibers have to be hardened and supported, or else the new arm will rip clean off your shoulder the first time you flex. You'll need tensile support across your back, or your spine will snap the first time you lift something heavy. For a job like Quinn's you need new skin; human skin isn't tough enough to handle the subcutaneous tension of superhuman strength. You'll take a chip in your brain to handle the specific dataload from the artificial nerve system controlling the arm. You're getting the idea right?"

And why did this emergency happen in the first place?

"Richard Quinn woke up two hours ago from a three-day sedation period following his last operation. And some damn fool let him look in a mirror."

Read the series, I'm sure it'll give you guys plenty of fodder.

This is not spam. This is a legitimate comment.

This episode is a fucking travesty. As a new GM, I'm seeking out podcasts that can help me be a better one, and I was excited to hear some ideas, advice, tips, and hear the experiences of some established players on this subject, which was supposed to be "First Sessions".

Instead it was a bunch of idiot rambling without focus or coherence. When one of the first things said in the "we're finally on-topic" section is "I don't really have any advice for how to do a good first session", you make me feel like I've completely wasted my time.

The only good thing about this podcast was that you labeled all the parts of it so I could skip to the part I was interested in.

The worst part was that once I got there, you STILL didn't talk about the topic. What little discussion there was was general, vague, and obvious.

Put a little more effort in and you may have something. As it is, I'm not interested in listening to this again.
